Agility is the one of fun activities you can share with your dog. It's where dogs compete on an obstacle course for the best times and accuracy. Agility requires intense teamwork between the dog and the handler. A judge sets up a course, normally consisting of contact obstacles, tunnels, jumps etc and times the dog as the dog and the handler make their way through the course. Because agility is a team sport, it fosters a special bond between the handler and the dog. Dog that is bored in obedience often become an agility star. Negative behaviors often associated with boredom or inactivity minimize altogether.
Control training is important to keep your dog disciplined on the agility course. Dog must heel and sit. You must also teach your dog to know and obey different commands: to go left and right, lay down, wait, here. After those are mastered, the dog must learn normal recall and recall over obstacles. Also important is the "send away" command, making the dog go ahead you.
Agility is a great way for you dog to get in shape. If your dog is a chronic couch potato, agility will increase his activity level. Most of all- agility is fun. The joy of watching your dog as he rushes around the course and performs obstacles is worth the months of training. Your dog will love it too. It will make him feel useful and give him something to look forward.
